Samba is a free software for UNIX which provides the SMB (Server Message Block Protocol), which has originally been developed by Microsoft. In practice that means that it enables you to emulate the file- and printer services of Microsoft Windows. That means, you can share files and printers within your network.

To install Samba Server on your Raspberry Pi follow the steps:

Step 1

Update and Upgrade your system
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Step 2

Install Samba
sudo apt-get install samba samba-common-bin

Step 3

Open the Samba .config
sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf

And remove the hashtag (#) in front of
# security = user

If you have a job which requires you to get up at a different time each morning it may be annoying to set your alarm everynight when you come home. Devon, a blogger from esologic.com, coded a python script which wakes you up everytime your Google Calendar contains a date named “wake”.

You might ask yourself:”What exactly is the advantage” towards a normal alarm clock or my mobile?” The advantage is that you can access your Google Calendar from every deivce I know! People organizing their days with Google Calendar will find it pretty comfortable to add the exact time to wake up to their Calendars because it gives them a better overview of the time available throughout the day.

If you care a lot about your RasPi and run one or more exhausting processes for a few days you probably do not want to sit next to your RasPi all night long.

Ground Control offers you the chance to go downtown, sip a few beers and monitor your Raspberry Pi at the same time. Ground Control is a utility that monitors your Pi and pushes that data into the cloud so you can access it anywhere.

If you are in a public network, for example at university or the airport, your traffic can be recorded and decrypted. To prevent others from doing that you can send your traffic through a secured VPN-tunnel. The VPN-tunnel leads your traffic encrypted to a server which is processing your requests.

To be able to install the latest programversions we should update our packet sources:

sudo apt-get update

Now we are installing OpenVPN and OpenSSL.

With a few lines of code you can turn your Raspberry Pi into a nice chat parrner which executes, thanks to voice-control, your commands and even answers to you via Google Translation. The transformation from speech to text – and the other way round – are performed by Google services. And this works astonishingly well: The word-recognition has good match ratios without any training, the speech output sounds clear and is easy to understand.

For voice-recognition you will record a sound file, transform it into FLAC format and send it to Google. The Google servers are going to analyse your FLAC file and send back the text of the probably said word(s). With easy comparisons it is possible to link different words to several actions.

1. First off, you need to get your Pi to transmit sounds by using PiFM, download the binaries from icrobotics (download), extract them and run the following commands in the same folder:

$> sudo python
>>> import PiFm
>>> PiFm.play_sound("sound.wav")

2. To expand your range connect a 20cm plain wire to the Pi’s GPIO 4 to act as antenna. GPIO 4 is the 4. pin on the on the left row (inner row) of pins. I simply cut a wire of its plug and twisted it around the pin.

3. Tune your FM radio to your preferred frequency, I’ll choose 106,7 Mhz.

4. To change the boadcast frequency run the ./pifm binary as following:

sudo ./pifm sound.wav 100,0

This will broadcast on frequency 100 Mhz. In most countries only frequencies between 88 Mhz and 108 Mhz are working properly.
